Do We Need Another GIF or Do We Need a SNIF?

Another Governance Interoperability Framework (GIF)

SOA Link Governance Interoperability Framework

Today there was another announcement regarding vendor support of another Governance Interoperability Framework:

http://www.ebizq.net/news/6918.html

This new governance interoperability framework is called “SOA Link” and will be supported by the sixteen founding members include AmberPoint, Composite Software, Forum Systems, Infravio, Intalio, IONA, JBoss, Layer 7 Technologies, LogicBlaze, NetIQ, ParaSoft, Reactivity, SOA Software, SymphonySoft, webMethods and WSO2.

Governance Interoperability Framework (GIF)

It just seems like last year Systinet along with a number of other vendors introduced a GIF:

Ten leading SOA vendors have partnered with Systinet for the GIF, including Above All Software, Actional, AmberPoint, Composite Software, DataPower, HP, Layer 7 Technologies, MetaMatrix, Reactivity, and Service Integrity.

Vendor Positioning or is this a Real Need

I am sure there is some vendor positioning going on here, but I think that there is a real need for a Interoperability Framework but I am not sure it should stop at a GIF.

Shouldn't We be Working Towards a SOA Networks Interoperability Framework (SNIF)

I applaud these vendors for taking a lead on what will be the next stage in the SOA Governance adoption – the need to interoperate and manage governance policies between enterprises.  However I think that the GIF and SOA Link are only a short term solution; the bigger problem which needs to be addressed is a SOA Networks Interoperability Framework (SNIF).  A SNIF would address more than just governance policy but policies in general, security, transformational mapping between SOA, and other interoperability concerns.
